Careers in Civil Engineering
A career in Civil Engineering appeals to a broad range of people, it offers so much as a profession and draws on a diverse range of both artistic and scientific talents.
One reason that young engineers give for choosing civil engineering is 'variety'. Working within the civil engineering industry could mean working in an office environment on designs at a computer, or you could be working out on site, leading teams, solving problems and literally being 'hands-on'. In the 2004 ICE salary survey, civil engineers reported a high degree of job satisfaction with 71% being satisfied with their employer and 75% being satisfied with their present role.

Compulsory Purchase Inquiries
The new rules for compulsory purchase inquiries came into force on 29th January 2008.
The primary reason for the new Rules is to take account of changes introduced by Part 8 of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 and the subsequent Compulsory Purchase of Land Regulations 2004. The changes to the Rules also reflect the commitment given by the former Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in 2002 to combine into a single unified set of Rules the previously separate arrangements which applied to ministerial and non-ministerial CPOs. Changes have also been made that reflect the current practices adopted in procedure rules employed in other types of inquiries.
A copy of The Circular, which provides guidance to government departments, local authorities and statutory undertakers on the operation of the new Compulsory Purchase (Inquiries Procedure) Rules 2007 which replace, consolidate and update two existing sets of Rules can be downloaded by following the link.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is the new name for the Energy Performance Commitment proposal on which the Government consulted in 2006. The name of the scheme has been changed to prevent any confusion with Energy Performance Certificates.

Government Commits Public Money to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) involves capturing the carbon dioxide emitted when burning fossil fuels, transporting it and storing it in secure spaces such as geological formations, including old oil and gas fields and aquifers (natural underground reservoirs) under the seabed.
Fossil fuels will continue to play a significant role in the global energy mix for the foreseeable future. The Government believes that the development and wide-scale deployment of CCS is therefore important for our climate change and security of supply objectives. CCS has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel power stations by as much as 90%, and could contribute up to 28% of global carbon dioxide mitigation by 2050.
